An agent is something that can do something.

This might seem a rather vague definition, but the do part is important. In Mimesia, most things do not actively do anything (other than just be). There are three main types of agents that can do things in Mimesia:

1. A person
2. A computer program (either with or without an api)
3. A group

A group, in turn, can consist of multiple persons, computer programs, other groups, or even any mix of these.

To some extend, all types of agents are treated the same way within Mimesia. This means, for example, that an event or business page can be managed by a group of people. It also means that an application can have a public profile that you can interact with.

Mimesia itself is also an agent.
